Phillip Lim was born in Thailand and with Chinese roots. He is one of the few successful mainstream Asian designers. With his business partner Wen Zhou, he established his brand, 3.1 Phillip Lim. Phillip Lim’s brand is the essence of casual cool. His brand often feature demure colors, clean lines, a California calm and New York sophistication. His clothing represents a timeless chic that preserves its demeanor in a world of mind-boggling ever-changing trends.
The classic consistently produced by his line is represented in his own personal style, Lim told New York Magazine, “I look at pictures of myself when I was 5 years old and I think that, yes, that is exactly what I like.”
Lim’s started in the fashion industry working for Barneys, where came across designer Katayone Adeli. In that moment he called for an interview with the designer and managed to secure himself an internship.
This same passion led to him teaming with Wen Zhou, 3.1 Phillip Lim’s chief executive and co-founder, who formally ran a successful textile company that supplied, upon seeing Lim’s designs, Wen “just knew that it was good.”
On a visit to New York City Wen gave Lim a very blunt message “That’s enough. I’m tired of you crying let’s start a company.”
“Phillip is elusive,” says Wen Zhou, “It’s shy,” says Lim. Elusive, shy, even distant and aloof”. So maybe it’s the elusivity and shyness of Phillip Lim, the man and the brand, that intrigues us. There is something to be said for a work ethic and perfection that doesn’t brag about itself but rather quietly produces beauty time and time again. It could be that this more than anything is the reason we’ve been fans from the very beginning.
